We Want To… Colossians 3:2

This post concerns the things we want to have while living in this life.

We Want To… discusses our desires in light of Paul’s instructions in Colossians 3:2. “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

Consider Adam and Eve in the Garden. Both wanted to eat of the forbidden tree, Genesis 3:6. “…when the woman saw that the tree…good for food… it was a delight to the eyes… the tree…to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and… gave some to her husband… and he ate.”

When presented with temptations, our minds must decide whether we desire the result of the temptation, or to obey God more.

Consider the Children of Israel and Achan at Jericho. When God caused the walls to fall, He directed metal objects for the treasury and destruction for everything else. However, Achan desired and took some of the plunder for himself. God, displeased, directed Achan’s death.

He wanted the plunder. He took it despite what God said.

Consider King David and the sight of naked Bathsheba. He wanted her for sexual pleasure although she belonged to another. David’s mind overruled his devotion to serving God.

Consider the Jewish hierarchy and Jesus. They could see His miracle of raising Lazarus that proved His Deity. But rather than see Moses’ Law and their positions ended, they plotted to crucify Jesus, John 11:48. “If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

They wished to keep their positions.

The above verses show that when tempted to want something sinful, we can fall into sin.

More than 2000 years have passed since Jesus died. But we still fall to the temptation of getting what we want rather than obeying God and putting Him first in our lives.

Let us resolve to always obey God rather than yielding to getting what we want.

So, what did we learn?

1.Our temptations endeavor to get us to yield to our desires rather than obey God.

2.We need to always put God first in our lives.
