The Shepherds’ Visit Luke 2:8-21

This post summarizes the results of the shepherds’ visit to the baby Jesus.

Shepherds, keeping watch at night over their sheep at a site close to Nazareth, saw an amazing and fearful sight.

An angel appeared and provided a message and signs for them to identify a baby, Luke 2:10-12:

“… the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

Next, these fearful shepherds heard a multitude of angels.

They proclaimed, ‘praise to God and peace to men.’

These sights and the language of the angel— “… a sign for you: you will find…”—caused the shepherds to go and see the baby Jesus for themselves. They made use of these signs conveniently provided by the angel for identification.

As a result of the visit, the shepherds told everyone about the angels and the baby. Because of the shepherds’ visit and comments, much wonder among the people occurred.

All this happened because of what God decided. He used the shepherds’ visit and the common people, to arouse and create wonder among all people about this extremely important birth.

One might have expected the important, religious people of the day to exclusively receive this important announcement. But this did not happen. Instead, the hand of God decided to announce the birth of Jesus to all people by the shepherds’ visit.

The peace for men proclaimed by the heavenly host must refer to the salvation later offered by the Messiah.

The shepherds’ visit accomplished what God intended, namely, a stirring up and wonder among the common people about this great birth.

Finally, what summarizes what I learned? God carefully arranged the events and the announcement about Jesus’ birth so that all  people would hear and be stirred up.
