Crucifixion, Luke 23:26-33

This post concerns Jesus’ crucifixion.

Crucifixion discusses Jesus removal by Roman soldiers and nailing to a cross, Luke 23:26-27. “And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.”

Archeological findings suggest that Jesus carried only the crossbeam. The upright pole remained in place at the execution site. The Romans usually grabbed a person from the crowd and compelled him to perform a less-than-desirable task. Possibly, Jesus due to His beaten, weakened condition could have fallen. Then the soldiers grabbed Simon.

Note that a crowd followed and lamented for Jesus. Jesus addressed the women, Luke 23:28-31. “…do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ …For if they do these things when the wood…green, what will happen when …dry?”

Jesus refers to the destruction of Jerusalem. The Romans will kill a single innocent man now—the green wood. But when they come to destroy the city—the dry unrepentant wood—the Jews who crucified Him, will especially suffer.

Then they nailed Him to a cross, Luke 23:32-33. “Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place …called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.”

Thus, Jesus willingly suffered and died for our salvation.

So, what did we learn?

1.Pilate decided to allow the death of Jesus.

2.In the destruction of Jerusalem, women would suffer.
