CAN PAIN DESTROY FAITH? JOB 1 and 2

This post discusses the faith of Job in pain.

Ever been life-threatening sick? Like stage four cancer? Or a near fatal heart attack? Serious sickness can bring changes to our faith in God.

Job’s pain in the Bible is an example.

Earlier, Satan accused Job of being faithful to God because he was blessed materially. Consequently, God allowed Satan to do terrible things to Job. First, his financial support was taken away. Second, his ten children were killed in a storm. But Job remained faithful.

Then, Satan said that Job would curse God if allowed to experience bodily pain. So, God allowed Satan to cause painful sores on Job’s body. Thus, he scraped himself with pottery because of the pain. But the pain did not cause Job to curse God. Accordingly, he remained faithful.

Next, Satan caused Job’s wife to tempt him.

She observed his intense pain and suggested he “curse God and die.” Satan wanted Job to abandoning his faith. But Job remained faithful.

We can learn from these temptations.

First, from Job chapters one and two, we learn that God has the right to allow bad things like pain or good things like blessings to come into our lives.

Second, Job’s faithfulness inspires us to be faithful when we are sick or in pain. In addition, like Job, we learn that we should never abandon faith in God, not even in severe pain.

Third, Job began with an important additional asset. He had faith in God that held him true in these stressing situations. Thus, we are inspired to keep our faith when sick or in pain.

The Apostle Paul supplies an additional help, 1 Corinthians 10:13. “… God is faithful, … he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Thus, God always provides a way to escape pain and  temptation.

From Job, we learn:

  1. Like Job, we need to develop such a deep faith in God that we can repel even paithout cursing Him.
  2. Job handled pain alone. He did not listen to his wife. How we handle pain depends on each of us individually.

In summary, we can choose to be faithful to God or reject Him.
