God’s Hand, Acts 12:5; 7

This post concerns God’s hand acting twice after Herod killed the Apostle James.

God’s Hand discusses the liberation by God of Peter when Herod intended to kill him and later, Herod’s death.

After Herod killed the Apostle James, he arrested Peter intending to kill him. The church   prayed for Peter, Acts 12:5. “So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest l prayer for him was made to God by the church.”

God sent an angel to liberate Peter from prison although guarded by sixteen Roman soldiers, Acts 12:7. “And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him,”

The angel liberated him from the prison and left him in the streets. Then, Peter informed the church of his safety and went to some other safe place.

Meanwhile, the sixteen soldiers guarding Peter suffered executed, because Peter had escaped.

Afterwards, Herod was angry with Tyre and Sidon, Acts 12:20. “the people of Tyre and Sidon, … came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food.”

Then, they bragged on Herod when he made a speech, Acts 12:21-22. “On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!”

Accepting this praise displeased God, Acts 12:23- . “Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.”

Death of this enemy allowed the church to grow and multiply.

Afterwards, Saul and Barnabus returned to Antioch bringing John Mark with them.

So, what did we learn?

1.God sent an angel to liberate Peter from prison.

2.An angel of God struck down Herod, because he did not give God the glory.
