Omnipresence, Jeremiah 23:23-24; Psalm 139:7-12

This post concerns the omnipresence of God.

‘Omnipresence’ describes what the Bible says about God being everywhere all the time. To know God, we need to understand His presence as expressed in God’s rhetorical question in Jeremiah 23:23-24. “…I… God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.”

King David recognized this attribute of God, Psalm 139:7-12. “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? …I ascend to heaven, you are there!…  make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness…not dark to you; the night…bright as the day, for darkness…as light with you.”

David says that if it were possible to ascend so high as to reach heaven, or descend so low we would reach hades, God still exists in both places. A sailor reaching faraway seas might imagine he has left God behind. Not so! Turns out, God exists everywhere.

The person dedicated to sin might imagine that his misdeeds could occur in secret, and no one would know. But God would!

Facts that God’s omnipresence make possible for us today:

a.God also knows the good things that I do. If no one compliments me, God still knows.

b.God knows when the devil tempts me.

c.The omnipresence of God makes His love possible, Romans 8:38-39. “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God”  

So, what did we learn?

1.An omnipresent God exists everywhere.

2.An omnipresent God knows what happens everywhere and allows His love to care for His children all the time.
