Peter’s Sermon, Acts 2:14-36
This post concerns Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost.
Peter’s Sermon discusses the meaning of what the people see and hear, Acts 2:14-21. Peter addressed them: “…not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. … through the prophet Joel … God declares that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh… it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord … saved.”
Peter states that drunkenness did not usually occur at that hour of the day. Then, he says that this occasion fits Joel’s prophecy. He continues to answer the question of verse 12, “…what does this mean?” by saying that the fulfillment of this prophecy and calling on the name of the Lord will provide salvation.
Next, Peter begins to explain calling on the name of the Lord. He reminds them of Jesus and His miracles and that they had caused Jesus’ crucifixion by the plan of God. But God raised Him up.
Two statements required proof: the resurrection of Jesus and the fact that it all was the plan of God.
Peter says the apostles were witnesses of the resurrection.
To prove how the plan of God was employed, he quotes from Psalms 16:10. “For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.” This resurrection was not David. He was never resurrected.
Instead, the resurrected holy one must have applied to the resurrected Messiah. Then, he quotes from Psalms 110:1. “The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand,” This shows Jesus’ power and how he could have sent this baptismal measure of the Holy Spirit.
Peter summarizes, Acts 2:36. “Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Thus, he explains Jesus as the Lord and Messiah.
So, what did we learn?
1.Both Joel and David issued prophecies concerning the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
2.Jesus resides now at God’s right hand.
3.God had called Jesus Lord and Messiah.
4.The apostles testified that the resurrection occurred.
