The Council, Acts 23:1-35
This post concerns Paul before the Jewish Council and how he came safely to Felix.
‘The Council’ discusses what happened to Paul that ended up with him being in Caesarea before Felix, the governor.
The tribune wanted to know the charge against Paul. So, he brought him before the Jewish council.
But Paul saw that both Sadducees and Pharasees were present and claimed to side with the Pharasees’ philosophy. (The Sadducees deny resurrection, angel, and spirits. The Pharasees believe in all three.) This caused a riot, and the tribune had to rescue Paul.
Paul could have felt despondency at this point. But that night God stood by him and encouraged him, Acts 23:11. “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”
At that point, forty Jews formed a band and a plot to kill Paul. They would ask the chief priests to request Paul to come to them for further questioning. The band planned to kill Paul on his way to the council.
But Paul’s sister’s son heard about the plot and informed Paul and the tribune.
Then, the tribune foiled the plot, Acts 23:23. “Then he called two of the centurions and said, “Get ready two hundred soldiers, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea at the third hour of the night.”
Thus, Paul was safely transported to Caesarea to Felix the governor at night.
Felix promised to hear Paul’s case when his accusers came from Jerusalem.
So, what did we learn?
1.The tribune rescued Paul from a council argument between the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
2.Forty men vowed to kill Paul as he came again to the council.
3.A nephew of Paul disclosed the plan to the tribune.
4.The tribune sent Paul to Felix at night under the protection of Roman soldiers.
