#18 On the Nature of God: He talks to and listens to His Creation

One of the outstanding attributes of God as far as humans are concerned is that He communicates with them. After the flood and the cleansing of the earth of sinful men, God chose a family—Abraham’s family—and began the long process of bringing a Savior into the world through that family despite the stubborn sinfulness of mankind. Soon after, Moses was born. Moses was inspired to begin his writings with creation, the major question that occurs to humans—”Where did we come from and how did we get here?”

This question is answered in Genesis 1:1:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Moses then wrote the first five books—Genesis through Deuteronomy. Other writers were inspired to continue the narrative of what God wanted man to know—Joshua, King David, King Solomon and sixteen inspired prophets, 2 Peter 1:19-21:

“And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

Likewise, the New Testament writers were inspired to write about God’s extreme gift to mankind—the sacrifice of His Son on the cross as a propitiation for man’s sins. Everything that is needed to please God and attain salvation can be found in the pages of the New Testament, 2 Timothy 3:15-17:

“…from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Thus, God has a long history of communicating with His creation by writing down His instructions on how to please Him and go to heaven. In this way, the Bible is God speaking to all His creation.

God’s instructions to mankind were finished and complete in New Testament days, Jude 3:

“Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

This scripture tells us that God has finished talking to mankind. We should not expect any further revelation which could be added to God’s inspired word.

Also, God desires man to worship Him. Jesus explained this to the Samaritan woman, John 4:23:

“… the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Worship is man’s effort to glorify God and attune the mind to what God desires of him.

Prayer is part of worship. Talking to God through prayer is how God wants us to communicate with him.

Prayer is so important as a means of communicating with God that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are available as aides to our prayers.

Jesus will always intercede, Hebrews 7:24-25:

“… he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”

The Holy Spirit labors to help the saints, Romans 8:26:

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

Thus, the Christian can speak to our heavenly Father and has Divine help to do so.

It is a comfort to know that we can hear from God through His inspired word and talk to Him through prayer.

Therefore, the nature of God is to communicate with His creation.
