Destruction of Jerusalem, Luke 21:1-19
This post covers Jesus’ comments about a widow’s gift and the destruction of Jerusalem.
Destruction of Jerusalem discusses the end of the Jewish state. Jesus saw a poor widow giving two small coins, Luke 21:3. “And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” This widow gave all she had. This gift constituted a lesson to the disciples that paralleled His death on the cross when He gave all—everything.
Then, Jesus spoke a prophecy about the end of the Jewish state and worship in the temple, Luke 21:6. “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
This shocking statement brought forth a question, Luke 21:7-9. “And…when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”
So, Jesus gave a warning of fake Messiahs and wars to terrify them before the end.
Then, Jesus prophesied, Luke 21:10-12. “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom… There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake.” There would be wars, earthquakes, and signs from heaven. But first His followers would be persecuted.
When on trial, they would receive divine help to answer the charges, Luke 21:13; 15. “This will be your opportunity to bear witness…
…I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.”
By their steadfastness, Jesus would provide safety, Luke 21:19. “By your endurance you will gain your lives.”
So, what did we learn?
