Anxiousness, Matthew 6:25-34
This post concerns anxiousness, how we feel mentally.
Anxiousness discusses a widespread problem for everyone. Jesus begins this teaching with the word, therefore. This indicates a connection with the teaching that has gone before, Matthew 6:25-29. “Therefore, I tell you… not… anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.” Jesus has just talked about laying up treasure in heaven. Then, he discusses the impossibility of serving two masters. As His disciples ponder how to put treasure in heaven and serve God only, anxiety could occur. So, Jesus issues a command, do not be anxious.
Jesus then mentions the futility of anxiety, Matthew 6:25-30. “… life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them…you… of more value than they? And which of you by … anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why…anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory…not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith.” An anxious mind can accomplish nothing and shows a dwindling faith in God.
Then, for a second time He uses therefore to command abstinence from worry, or else they would exhibit the character of the unreligious Gentiles. Instead, seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness and let God care for your needs.
Finally, for the third time Jesus uses therefore to again command us to live without anxiety one day at a time, Matthew 6:34. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Each day will have enough concerns to occupy our minds.
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus commands a lack of anxiety.
2.God will supply all we need.
