The Empty Tomb, Luke 24:1-12
This post concerns the meaning of the empty tomb.
The Empty Tomb discusses how God arranged the burial and resurrection of Jesus, Luke 24:1-3. “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Thus, the women who followed Jesus from Galilee and had prepared spices found an empty tomb at early dawn. The massive stone placed at the opening of the tomb was rolled away, the seal broken.
When they went inside, they found the tomb empty.
While they were highly surprised, two angels—identified by their apparel—explained the situation. Jesus was alive, arisen! Jesus had prophesied during preaching in Galilee that He would be crucified and arise on the third day!
These women immediately reported to the group of disciples, Luke 24:8-11. “And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.”
These women reliably testified what they saw. The body was not there!
At first, the disciples registered surprise and did not believe the plain facts as testified by the women.
But Peter demanded to see for himself, Luke 24:12. “But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.”
Surprise and disbelief comprise the first reactions to the emptiness. They did not spend time trying to rationalize it or blame it on the guardian soldiers. More evidence would come a little later that night.
So, what did we learn?
1.God arranged Jesus’ resurrection and the empty tomb.
2.The Apostles did not believe what the women reported.
3.Peter verified the empty tomb for himself.
