Do you use Knowledge Wisely? 1 Kings 11:4-5

This post is about using our knowledge wisely.

People vary in their ability to use knowledge wisely.

For example, Mary Ann, the college educated Home Economics teacher, used her knowledge and wisdom to teach students how to bake scrumptious cakes and delicious pies. But she could not keep her checkbook balanced. She regularly wrote checks that bounced. Although she had the knowledge, she did not use wisdom in managing her bank account because she regularly passed bad checks.

Some Bible people were the same. They often had knowledge, but failed to use wisdom in their daily lives.

For instance, consider King Solomon.

He began well because God gave him knowledge and wisdom to govern as king. In addition, God added that if he would keep His statues and commandments, He would also grant him long life. Surrounding countries knew of this wisdom.

Additionally, the knowledge of Solomon should have guided him to obey God all his life. But Solomon’s wisdom did not result in control of his sexual appetites. And most importantly, he married idol-worshipping women from the surrounding nations in direct disobedience to God’s law.

In addition, he sinned by building temples and worshipping the idols these women worshipped. 1 Kings 11:4-5:

“… when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.”

In conclusion, Solomon’s failures teach two lessons.

Firstly, we should wisely control our sexual appetites, because sex is a powerful influence in our lives.

Secondly, actions contrary to God’s law are sinful and unwise. As an example, God has directed that marriage be between one woman and one man for life. We must wisely follow God’s rule in marriage.
