The Mob and Rescue, Acts 21:27-40
This post concerns the mob that attacked Paul and his rescue.
‘The Mob and Rescue’ describes the event that led A Roman Tribune to rescue Paul from a Jewish mob, Acts 21:27-28. “… the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd and laid hands on him, crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This… the man who… teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place. Moreover, he even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.”
The Jews had seen Paul with Trophimus and assumed that Paul had brought a Gentile into the temple. This excited the people to act like a mob and beat Paul. The Roman Tribune heard of it, Acts 21:31. “…as they were seeking to kill him, word came to the tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.”
The appearance of the Tribune and his men stopped the beating. Then, the tribune arrested Paul, put him in chains, and inquired of the mob about what he had done. But only confusion answered his question. So, he had his men bring Paul into the Roman barracks. As they were going up the stairs into the barracks, Paul addressed the Tribune, Acts 21:37. “May I say something to you?”
This surprised the Tribune because he imagined that he had arrested a troublesome Egyptian. But Paul identified himself, Acts 2 1:39. “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no obscure city. I beg you, permit me to speak to the people.”
Then, the Tribune permitted him, and Paul spoke to the mob in Hebrew.
So, what did we learn?
1.The Jews raised a mob that beat Paul by lying about him bringing a Gentile into the temple.
2.The Roman Tribune and his men rescued Paul and gave him permission to speak to the mob.
This chapter shows God caring for Paul. He cares for us today.
