Giving Thanks, Psalms 66

This post concerns giving thanks to God.

Giving Thanks discusses how this Psalm directs our minds to thankfulness.

Firstly, everyone should offer proper praise, Psalms 66:1-3. “Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!”

Creation and the deeds of God truly deserve the greatest praise from everyone on the earth. Thus, thanks to God should appear.

Secondly, in Psalms 66:5-6, two examples stress the mighty deeds of God. These deeds refer to the crossing of the Red Sea by the children of Israel and when they crossed the Jordan River to the promised land. Today, we give thanks for similar deeds.

Next, praise is given to God as a result of His care and protection during testing, Psalms 66:8-10. “Bless our God… let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried.”

Through the trials of life, God has cared for and protected us. Thus, we give thanks to God.

Then, this causes us to worship, Psalms 66:13-14. “I will come into your house with burnt offerings; I will perform my vows to you, that which my lips uttered and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.”

In times of trouble, we promise to do better. When we assess our blessings, we should remember that we promised to do better in worship.

Finally, we should thank God for blessing us spiritually, Psalms 66:16-20. “Come and hear… and I will tell what he has done for my soul… truly God listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.”

The giving of thanks should occur all year, but especially during the Thanksgiving holidays.

So, what did we learn?

1.Creation and God’s deeds cause giving of thanks.

2.God’s care during times of trouble and testing causes us to thank Him.

3.We give thanks to God for hearing our prayers,
