Travels with Paul, Acts 18:18-28

This post concerns travels with Paul from Corinth to Antioch to Asia Minor.

Travels with Paul discusses how Paul preached as he traveled, Acts 18:18-23. “After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers and set sail for Syria…And they came to Ephesus…he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined…he said, “I will return to you if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus. When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch…

…After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.”

Paul ended the second preaching tour by going first for a short visit to Ephesus and promising to return. Then he reported his work to the church in Antioch.

Meanwhile, a noted and learned speaker came to Ephesus. He spoke forcefully in the synagogue. But he erroneously knew only the baptism of John the Baptist. At that point, Aquilla and Priscilla took him aside and explained about God sending Jesus. The apostles of Jesus had taught baptism, not from John the Baptist, but about Jesus dying on the cross and providing immersion for the remission of sins.

These verses provide two points:

1.That a woman can instruct a man privately.

2.The baptism of John the Baptist gave way to the baptism of Jesus.

When Apollos wanted to return to Corinth, the brethren at Ephesus provided a letter of introduction for him to take with him. He effectively confronted the Jews by using the scriptures to show Jesus as the Messiah.

So, what did we learn?

1.Paul ended his second preaching trip by returning to Antioch.

2.Paul started a third preaching trip by strengthening Brethren in Asia Minor.

3.Aquilla and Priscilla corrected Apollos and his error in preaching only the baptism of John.
