Eleven To Twelve, Acts 1:15-26
This post concerns the eleven apostles becoming twelve again.
Eleven To Twelve discusses the appointment of Matthias as one of the apostles, Luke 1:15-16. “Peter stood up… (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, …” concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.”
Then, he related what happened, Acts 1:17-19. “For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, …Field of Blood.)
Matthew 27:5 says that Judas hung himself. Thus, after hanging, his body fell and burst. The priest used the betrayal money belonging to Judas to acquire the field. However, the field legally belonged to Judas or his heirs.
Next, Peter gives the scriptures for replacing Judas, Acts 1:20. “For it …written in the Book of Psalms, “May his camp become desolate…and Let another take his office.”
These quotes come from Psalms 69:25 and 109:8.
Then he put forth the qualifications, Acts 1:21-22. “So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he …taken up from us— one of these men must … witness his resurrection.”
Two men fit these two qualifications, Matthias and Barsabbas. They prayed for God to choose as to which He chose. Matthias, chosen by lot, became recognized as an apostle.
Note that no one can become an apostle at a later date since no one can fit these requirements. For example, when Herod beheaded James, No effort appeared to choose a replacement.
So, what did we learn?
1.Two scriptures prophesied replacement of Judas.
2.God chose Matthias as a new apostle.
