Loving Our Enemies, Matthew 5:43-48

This post concerns Jesus’ teaching about loving our enemies.

Loving Our Enemies explains what Jesus taught by these statements, Matthew 5:43-48. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more … doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father…”

Jesus’ admonition to love our enemies has a solid basis. Children of God need to react toward their enemies like God reacts. He sends physical blessings on people despite the ungodly things they do toward Him.

Treating our enemies with kindness shows us to be sons of God and unlike gross sinners of the world.

This means that if we only love those who love us, then our response appears like the world and not like a child of God, because God loves all humanity regardless of how they treat Him.

Note. This love of an enemy must come from an exercise of the will, not an emotion as toward a mate.

Just treating only a brother with kindness shows a worldly response to our worldly environment. We, like God, should treat everyone with kindness.

So, what did we learn?

1.We love our enemies because God loves them.

2.We love our enemies because we are sons of God.

3.The disciple should strive to be like God and love even those who show unkind actions like enemies do.
