Peter’s Failure, Luke 22:54-62

This post described Peter’s failure during Jesus’ Jewish trial.

Peter’s Failure discusses the three denials of Jesus by Peter, Luke 22:54-55. “Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.”

Peter should have expected temptations while sitting at their fire, Luke 22:56-57. “Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” Of course, he knew Jesus. But sitting alone with those attempting to kill Jesus led to weakness so that he denied knowing Jesus. This incident can provide a lesson for all of us. Temptations can arise when we warm ourselves at the Devil’s fire.

Then, someone else accused him, Luke 22:58. “And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.”

Peter denied knowing Jesus again.

An hour later, Peter may have felt safe, Luke 22:59-62. “…  after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.”… immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed… the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.”

Although Peter was a big talker, he could not stand up to direct accusations. For us today, we need to increase our faith, so we do not fail like Peter.

So, what did we learn?

1.Even the personal presence of Jesus Himself cannot guarantee faithfulness.

2.The omniscience of Jesus shows in His prophecy about Judas.
