Serving God, Matthew 6:22-24
This post focuses on what Jesus taught about serving God versus serving the world.
Serving God discusses Jesus’ lessons about the aim of our lives, Matthew 6:22-24. “The eye …the lamp of the body. So, if your eye… healthy, your whole body … full of light, but if your eye …bad, your whole body … full of darkness. If then… darkness, how great the darkness! No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he…devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
Just before these verses, Jesus stressed putting your treasure in heaven rather than on the earth. Despite this command about treasure in heaven, many people attempt to double-focus— their minds try to dwell on heaven as well as on worldly things and depositing money on this earth.
They fail in their attempt to serve God and store up treasure in heaven.
So, Jesus provides an analogy of the mind and the body. The mind makes up an ‘eye’ directing what the body does. If the mind spends much time dwelling on wickedness, then the body consists of doing wicked deeds. On the other hand, if the mind dwells on spiritual matters, the body will embrace righteousness.
Lastly, Jesus stresses His main point twice. Disciples, like slaves, cannot serve two masters. Always, slaves receive commands from and obey a single master. Trying to serve two masters will cause hatred and dislike for one and love and devotion to the other.
Then, Jesus says directly that disciples cannot serve God and money.
So, what did we learn?
1.The focus of our minds directs what we do. Either we will serve God or earthly matters.
2.Jesus flatly forbids any effort to serve God and money.
