Promises Kept, Luke 2:26-32
This post contains information about promises kept by God.
Promises Kept discusses proof that what God vows happens.
At the time of Jesus’ birth, Simeon, perhaps an older priest or prophet, believed and obeyed the Holy Spirit, Luke 2:26-27. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, when the parents brought in the child Jesus,”
God had promised him through the Holy Spirit that he would see the Messiah before he died. Thus, the Spirit directed him to the temple when Jesus was brought in, and he blessed God, Luke 2:28-32. “…he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now you… letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Did Simeon expect a grown man as the leader of an army to free his people?
But at this time, Simeon states that God’s salvation appeared before him—the baby Jesus. Thus, God had kept His promise to Simeon and to all people—a Savior, although just a baby at this point. Simeon believed that God could work salvation through this child.
Note Simeon’s prophecies that the salvation to come would be for glory and revelation to the nation of Israel and to the Gentiles. Somehow, this announcement went unheeded by almost everyone. More than thirty years would pass before the gospel reached the Gentiles as preached by Peter (see Acts 10.)
The Jews crucified Jesus and mainly rejected God’s plan for salvation. But God raised Jesus up and elevated Him to His right hand.
Today, the fact that God keeps His word becomes a strong encouragement for us to obey and remain faithful.
