Adultery, Matthew 5:27-30

This post concerns the sin of adultery that Jesus wants to eliminate.

Adultery discusses both a mental and a sexual sin, Matthew 5:27-30. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Thus, Jesus seeks to cut off the mental process that precedes and promotes the physical sin of adultery.

Note, this sin addresses a problem that men have when looking at women. King David had the problem of looking with lustful intent at Bathsheba, 2 Samuel 11:2; 4. “It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and …walking on the roof of the king’s house, … saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful…

So, David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her.”

Many just fall into this sin without thinking of the problems adultery causes:

1.Seeks to break apart what God has joined.

2.Breaks apart homes with children.

3.Shows that I have no integrity and do not keep my promises.

4.Stop and consider: Do I really want to do this?

Consider the two additional warnings about looking lustfully. Note. Any warning doubled shows the seriousness of a sin, Matthew 5:29-30. “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. … better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body …into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. … better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” Further, the seriousness of this sin appears in the penalty of being cast into hell.

So, what did we learn?

1.Do not look lustfully on a woman. The likelihood of looking resulting in adultery exists, like King David in the Old Testament.

2.In addition to adultery, looking lustfully comprises a sinful behavior all by itself.
