The Priestly Prayer, John 17:1-5
This post concerns Jesus’ priestly prayer.
The Priestly Prayer discusses the subjects in one of the last prayers of our Lord. This prayer occurred on the night of His betrayal and involved some of His final teachings to His apostles.
This prayer began by Jesus praying for Himself, John 17:1-5. “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him… eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent… glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do…Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”
Jesus understands that His time had finally come.
The cross represents the apex of Christ’s work on this earth as glorification of God because it represented a successful end to the plan of God to redeem humanity. Death on the cross would also glorify Jesus because He had accomplished the work God designed for Him to do as a faithful Son.
After the cross and the resurrection, Jesus would ascend to be enthroned along with the glory of the Father.
Additionally, Jesus prays for disciples of the future. He desired unity of all believers, John 17:20-21. “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all… one, just as you, Father… in me, and I in you, that they also …in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
Today, we need to recognize Jesus’ request for belief and oneness as we strive for unity as an aid in converting the world.
Many conflicting doctrines exists in so-called Christianity today. However, by observing the Bible only and dismissing the ideas and comments of men, unity can result.
So, what did we learn?
