A Prophetic Parable, Luke 14:16-24

This post concerns a parable told by Jesus with prophetic overtones.

A Prophetic Parable discusses the rejection of an invitation to attend a great banquet and become part of God’s kingdom.

This parable resulted from Jesus observing people vying for a place of honor at a feast. Jesus tried to teach them to choose lower honor seats. He also taught them to invite the less fortunate and lowly to feasts.

Then, someone exclaimed, Luke 14:15. “Blessed… everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

So, Jesus told a parable about eating, Luke 14:16-18. “…A man once gave a great banquet and invited many… he sent his servant to those…invited, ‘Come, for everything… now ready.’ But they all alike began to make excuses… So, the servant came and reported…to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there … room.’ And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house …filled.’ For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

These rejections correspond to the action of most of the Jewish people to the gospel. Thus, rejection of Jesus results in eternally lost.

The next two invitations mimic preaching and conversion of many Samaritans and the conversion of Cornelius, a Gentile, the first of many.

Thus, this parable turns out as prophetic.  Three classes of people had the opportunity to join God’s kingdom: the Jews, the Samaritans, and the Gentiles . Most Jews immediately rejected Christianity. But baptism occurred for a great many Samaritans and many Gentiles.

So, what did we learn?

1.God desires that all people be part of His kingdom.

2.Rejecting God’s invitation results in eternal destruction.
