A question, Luke 20:27-40

The Sadducees who did not believe in angels or the resurrection, tried to baffle Jesus with a logical-dilemma question, Luke 20:27-40. “…they asked him a question, …, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.” They used as an example a woman who married, one by one, seven brothers. All seven died without children. Then, they asked if there was a resurrection, which brother would have her as a wife? To them this was a logical dilemma that would produce endless arguments between themselves, Jesus, and the audience. If Jesus could not answer, then He would not deserve the favor of the crowd.

But Jesus could and did answer. He said they were wrong because they did not know the scriptures or the power of God. He explained that in the resurrection and in heaven marriages would not exist. Those resurrected would equal the angels.

He then quoted Exodus 3:6 where God said, “I am the God of Abraham… Isaac… Jacob,” not I was the God of Abraham… Isaac… Jacob.

This scripture clearly shows that the dead have existence and await a resurrection. Thus, the present tense of the verb am shows that the dead do not go into oblivion when they die as believed by the Sadducees.

Obviously, an additional lesson from Jesus’ answer stresses that Bible students should read carefully because every word in these inspired writings assumes a vast importance as the word of God.

Jesus’ comments also provide proof that two ages for humans exist, this age, or this world, and that age, or eternity.

So, what did we learn?

1.Marriages will not exist in eternity.

2.The incident of Moses and the burning bush assures us that after death the righteous await resurrection.

3.Jesus stressed that there would be a resurrection for His followers.
