The Connection, Acts 1:1-3
This post concerns Luke’s connection of the book of Acts with the gospel of Luke.
Acts discusses the next step in God’s plan for redeeming humanity, Acts 1:1-3. “In the first book, Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.”
In the beginning of his gospel, Luke also addressed Theophilus. Then, he records the teachings and actions of Jesus. The book of Acts also written by Luke, presents a sequel to what happened after Jesus was crucified and resurrected.
The apostles were able to represent Jesus as alive due to His appearances to them over the next forty days after His resurrection.
Jesus continually spoke about the kingdom of God. He spoke of it in one of His last conversations with the apostles on the night of His betrayal during the Passover, Luke 22:17-18. “And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
The book of Acts now describes the time when the kingdom of God came.
In one of the last appearances after His resurrection, Jesus gave the apostles directions as to their future work, Matthew 28:18-20. “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
The book of Acts shows how they obeyed this command.
So, what did we learn?
1.Luke wrote Acts as a sequel to his gospel.
2.Acts shows when the kingdom of God came and how the apostles obeyed to go and preach and baptize.
