Leprosy, Luke 5:12-16
This post concerns the curing of a terrible disease by Jesus.
Leprosy discusses what Jesus did for people with this ailment and for us.
Leprosy, a dreadful, incurable skin disease, caused a person to have to live outside the community and call out ‘Leper’ when approaching anyone. Jesus cured a man, Luke 5:12. “…there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
So, Jesus was willing, Mark 1:41. “Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”
Note, the power of Jesus, Luke 5:12. “And immediately the leprosy left him…
… And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
Because of Jesus’ Deity, He did not become unclean upon touching the person with this disease. Note that Jesus’ compassion appears in this cleansing.
These verses also show that Jesus believed that the Old Testament law was still binding.
Surprisingly, we have many of the same characteristics as the person with this disease.
1.Like this person, sin comprises a terrible plague in our lives.
2.As with the person with this disease, Jesus alone can cleanse us of sin.
3.The blood of Jesus on the cross affords this cleansing, Ephesians 1:7. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,
See also, Revelation 1:5. “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood…”
Jesus loved us and went to the cross to cleanse us of sin.
So, what did we learn?
1.Much like this disease constituted a problem for Bible people, sin comprises a major problem in our lives.
2.Jesus’ blood, shed on the cross, enables Him to cleanse us of sin.
