Arrested, Acts 4:1-22
This post concerns what happened when the council arrested Peter and John after they performed a miracle.
Arrested discusses the statements of both the Jewish council and Peter’s replies.
After the two apostles spent the night in Jail, the council met with Peter and John and asked about the power or name they used to heal the man. Peter answered boldly and plainly, Acts 4:10. “…by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead— by him this man… standing before you well.”
Then, he clarified his subject, Acts 4:11-12. “This Jesus… the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone…salvation in no one else, for there… no other name under heaven given among men by which we must…saved.”
The astonished council immediately recognized that Peter and John associated with Jesus. Then, the council expressed their concern, Acts 4:16. “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them…evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it”
Then, they warned them to not speak in Jesus’ name. Peter was ready with a forceful answer, Acts 4:19-20. “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
Thus, the disciples of Jesus would continue to boldly proclaim the truth—the power came from Jesus, not man.
Today, we need to continue to proclaim the truth about Jesus—He was crucified and God raised Him from the grave.
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus’ name authorized the miracle.
2.The Jews crucified Jesus.
3.God raised Jesus from the tomb.
4.Peter and John would continue to speak of what they saw and heard.
