Sunday, Luke 4:16
This post concerns worship on Sunday.
Sunday discusses Jesus as an example of worship. In the days before the establishment of the church, Saturday—the Sabbath—comprised the worship day of God. Jesus made it His custom to worship then, Luke 4:16. “And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.”
Here we see Jesus worshipping God according to Moses’ Law, a custom for Him. He also volunteered to take part in the worship by reading from the Old Testament.
After Jesus’ resurrection and the establishment of the church, disciples worshipped on the first day of the week—Sunday—as shown in Acts 20:7. “… On the first day of the week, when we … gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day,”
The church met on Sunday to partake of the Lord’s Supper, and Paul preached a sermon.
Further, the Hebrew writer stresses the command to assemble for worship, Hebrews 10:25. “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Each of us should examine ourselves and where we are on Sunday and follow the example of Jesus.
In addition, the Hebrew writer warns in the next verse of the danger of being lost by the sin of neglecting worship, Hebrews 10:26. “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire…”
Thus, our assembling on Sunday accomplishes worship of God and encouragement of others.
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus’ habit was to worship God regularly every Saturday.
2.Christians worship on Sunday.
3.If we follow Jesus’ example, we will also worship regularly on Sunday.
