Jailed, Acts 5:17-32

This post tells how the apostles were jailed for preaching the gospel.

Jailed discusses the actions of the Sanhedrin council.

Although warned to not preach, the apostles continued to do so. This angered the Sadducees who arrested them and put them in prison for the night. However, God sent an angel to release them and send them back to the temple to continue preaching.

When the Sanhedrin found out about their release and their continued preaching, they had them brought before them. They made two charges: 1.You continued to preach about Jesus even when warned to stop. 2.You intended to bring the cross’ guilt upon us.

The apostles answered, Acts 5:29-32.  “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

This enraged the council so much they wanted to kill the apostles. But Gamaliel provided better advice. He reminded them that two other men had tried to lead the people and failed. So, he advised the council to leave the apostles alone, Acts 5:38-39. “So, in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking… of man, it will fail; but if… of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!”

The council accepted this advice, for the present. But they beat the apostles and let them go.

The apostles rejoiced that they received this harsh recognition for preaching the gospel and continued to preach.

So, what did we learn?

1.The Jewish council warned the apostles about preaching the gospel.

2.The beating by the council comprised the first physical punishment for the apostles.
