Resolutions about Pornography, 1 Samuel 11:2; 4

Resolutions about Pornography discusses what happened to King David when he looked at a naked woman, 1 Samuel 11:2; 4. “It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful…

…So, David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her.”

Looking at sexually suggestive views, pictures, or materials comprises pornography regardless of the source. King David looked at naked Bathsheba long enough to desire her sexually. Then, he committed adultery with her, a married woman. This sin brought forth a child and subsequently the murder of her husband. Thus, the sin of looking at an unclothed woman or pornography brought on other sins.

What happened to King David? He allowed his view of unclothed Bathsheba to destroy his usual obedience to God’s Law, Exodus 20:14. “You shall not commit adultery.”

The New Testament cites what should enter our minds, Philippians 4:8-9. “Finally, brothers, whatever… true, whatever… honorable, whatever… just, whatever… pure, whatever… lovely, whatever… commendable, if there…any excellence, if there… anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me— practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Failing to control what we see or look at, like King David, violates what God has said about what should fill our minds. To do otherwise represents sin.

During this time of year, we make resolutions on how to do better next year. Let us fill our minds with righteous thoughts and cast all pornography aside.

So, what did we learn?

1.King David’s sin of looking at naked Bathsheba led him to more sin.

2.The Bible forbids our minds to dwell on pornographic material.

3.We need to resolve to stop all views of pornography.
