Passover, Luke 22:1-20
This post concerns the Passover Jesus ate before the cross.
It discusses what Jesus said at the last supper before He died.
First, Judas arranged betrayal, Luke 22:3-4. “Then Satan entered into Judas …He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.”
Jesus sent Peter and John to arrange the room, Luke 22:8. “So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” He said that upon entry into the city, they would see a man carrying a jar of water. They were to follow the man home and ask the head of the house where they could eat the meal. He would show them a furnished upper room, Luke 22:13. “…they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.”
Jesus had planned this meal, Luke 22:14-15. “And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”
Then, Jesus introduced the elements of the Lord’s Supper as a remembrance of His body and explained the significance of the bread and the fruit of the vine, Luke 22:19-20. “And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body…given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise, the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup…poured out for you …the new covenant in my blood.”
So, these two elements signify the new covenant whereby Jesus’ body and blood makes up the sacrifice for the sins of the disciples.
So, what did we learn?
1.On the night of Jesus’ betrayal, He instituted the Lord’s Supper as a symbol of His sacrifice on the cross.
2.The unleavened bread and fruit of the vine in the Lord’s Supper signifies Jesus’ death for our sins.
