Conversion of an African, Acts 8:26-39

This post concerns the conversion of an African.

Conversion of an African discusses the Ethiopian Eunuch undergoing conversion to Christ by baptism, a complete immersion.

Ethiopia exists as a country immediately south of Egypt and consists of tall, dark-skinned people. Its Bible name often appears as Cush. Psalms 68:31 suggests that the country contained believers and worshippers of God. This Eunuch could have descended from these ancestors. Now he believes in God, and worships like the Jews.

Then, God sent an angel to direct Philip to the Eunuch, Acts 8:26-31. “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” …And there … an Ethiopian, a Eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians… He …come to Jerusalem to worship and …returning, seated in his chariot… reading the prophet Isaiah…

… the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot…So Philip…asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?… he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip…beginning with this Scripture…told him…about Jesus.”

Then, the Eunuch believed in Jesus, Acts 8:36-39. “…they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See…water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch… went on his way rejoicing.”

In this way, the Eunuch became a Christian by baptism, immersion in water. This involves true Biblical baptism in which the subject undergoes complete immersion.

Today, many undergo some new innovation that men call baptism—either sprinkling a little water or pouring a little water on the subject. However, these passages in Acts 8 show that Bible baptism consists of a complete immersion.

Therefore, let us again stress Bible baptism as what people should do after they believe and repent of their sins.

So, what did we learn?

1.The Eunuch underwent immersion as baptism.

2.True Bible baptism remains an immersion.
