Holy Spirit Baptism, Acts 2:1-13

This post concerns Holy Spirit baptism of the apostles.

Holy Spirit Baptism discusses the tongues of fire and sound that occurred on Pentecost. This baptism occurred to the twelve apostles, Acts 2:1-4. “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues.”

This Holy Spirit baptism of the apostles occurred not with wind but the sound of wind and not with fire but the appearance of divided tongues of fire.

The apostles then spoke in other languages or tongues due to this baptism. Further, the Spirit guided this speaking to  other than their birth language.

The multinational crowd which gathered witnessed this speaking, Acts 1:5-12. “Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews… from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how…we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians….” And all were amazed and perplexed… “What does this mean?”

The apostles were all recognized as Galileans. Yet, they spoke and over twelve nationalities understood.

But some people offered a different and mocking explanation, Acts 2:13. “…They… filled with new wine.”

So, what did we learn?

1.The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurred with a big sound and appearance of fire on the apostles.

2.The crowd that gathered heard their native languages spoken.

3.People from over ten countries heard in their own language.
