Malchus, John 18:10

This post concerns Peter cutting off the ear of the high priest’s servant, Malchus.

Malchus discusses lessons which come from this incidence in the arrest of Jesus.

After the last supper, Jesus and eleven of His disciples retired to the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas led a mob of soldiers and higher officials to the Garden to betray the Christ to them. Then, Peter acted, John 18:10-11. “Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) So, Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus, in charge, explained that His kingdom would not progress with swords and carnal power. Instead, He would accept the cup that the Father gave Him.

Focus on Malchus. As the slave of the High Priest, he should have died at the hands of Peter. But Jesus intervened, saved him, and then healed him, Luke 22:51. “But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him.”

No doubt, Peter intended to kill him. But Jesus saved him. When this happened, Peter and the remaining ten disciples abandoned Jesus, Matthew 26:56. “… Then all the disciples left him and fled.”

Today, we have several likenesses to Malchus.

a.He was a slave. We are slaves to sin.

b.He did not receive his deserved death at the hands of Peter. We do not receive our deserved eternal death because Jesus died in our place.

c.He received a gift he did not deserve. By dying in our place to remit our sins, we receive a gift we do not deserve.

Let Malchus’ story stimulate us to be more deeply appreciative of what Jesus did for us.

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus healed Malchus’ ear.

2.Jesus died and was resurrected so that we can live eternally.
