Moving to Sodom, Genesis 13:12-13
This post concerns moving self or the family to a Sodom or a sinful situation.
Moving to Sodom discusses where Lot moved that jeopardized his family, Genesis 13:12-13. “Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD.”
God directed Abram to leave Haran and live in Canaan. When he moved with all his possessions, his nephew, Lot, joined him. As time passed, both Abram and Lot gained great wealth that caused their herders to quarrel over grazing rights. Moving away from each other provided the solution.
Abram generously offered Lot first choice, Genesis 13:11-12. “So, Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus, they separated from each other. Abram settled in the land of Canaan,”
This choice comprised a catastrophe for Lot and his family. His two daughters, slated to marry residents of Sodom, left their future husbands and fled to the mountains with Lot and their mother. Later, they engaged in incest with their father so as to bear two sons, Moab and Ben-ammi. These boys fathered two nations, the Moabites and the Ammonites, neither of which worshipped God. Instead, they worshipped idols.
In summary, Lot began life on a prosperous note and ended in a cave in disgrace.
So, Lot’s life offers us a solemn lesson on the dangers of moving into an environment that does not honor God and His word.
Also, the Apostle Paul alerts us to this same danger, 1 Corinthians 15:33. “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
Let us guide our lives to live where we can continue to serve God.
So, what did we learn?
1.Lot chose badly to move to Sodom.
2.By incest, Lot fathered two idol-worshipping nations.
