The Wise Man, Matthew 7:24-27

This post concerns the wise man who builds his house…his life… on Jesus’ teachings.

The Wise Man as a post discusses the best way to build your life, Matthew 7:24-27. “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.  …everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. … the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Jesus has finished His sermon. Now, He summarizes what the hearer should do. Note, only two options are available—hear Jesus’ words and either obey or do not obey. Jesus provides an analogy of the foundation of a house and our lives: How we respond in this life to His teachings versus what we fail to do. Hearing alone will not do. We must obey.

The rock foundation represents Jesus’ teaching, namely, that found in this sermon. The sand foundation represents a reckless, heedless, and foolish life that ignores how Jesus desires us to live. The life based on the rock of Jesus’ teachings will stand when the storms and temptations of life appear. We will have eternal life with Him. But a life based not on what Jesus taught, but on heeding what the Devil offers will produce a great fall to perdition on the judgment day.

Therefore, what am I doing with Jesus’ teachings?

So, what did we learn?

1.A wise person builds his life around obeying Jesus’ teaching.

2.A foolish man does not fashion his life on obeying Jesus’ words.
