Jesus’ Question, Luke 20:41-47

Jesus’ Question seeks to show the importance of this question Jesus asked.

This question of Jesus’ focuses on the true role of the Christ, the Messiah, Luke 20:41-47. “…he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ… David’s son? For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ David thus calls him Lord, so how… he, his son?  Jesus uses the name, Christ, a public and popular name for the Messiah.

Even a blind beggar knew about Jesus, Mark 10:47. “And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  The many Old Testament passages describing the coming Messiah or Christ as a descendent of David were well known. Jesus quotes Ps. 110:1 that shows King David calling the Messiah his Lord. Then, how can the Messiah be David’s son?

In this way, Jesus’ question pinpoints the dual nature of Himself, the Christ, as both the Lord and offspring of David.

The Jewish leaders could not answer His question.

So, Jesus is asking this question in another attempt to reach and teach the religious leaders and cause them to respect Him. The proper answer would have them realize that the Messiah of prophecy would have two natures, one of God and one of man. The Messiah was prophesied as Mighty God, Is. 9:6, and a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, Is. 53:3. These two mutually incompatible qualities were true of the Messiah who was the descendent of David as a man and Lord of David as Deity.

Then, Jesus warned the crowd to beware of the scribes and personal pride. Likewise, we should beware of personal pride.

Next, Jesus said that their attitude meant they would get the greater condemnation. This could mean that in eternity, they would remember that they had not listened to Jesus when He tried to teach them.

So, what did we learn?

1.The Christ would have both human and divine attributes.

2.Personal pride could keep us from believing the scriptures that describe the character of Jesus.
