#4 On the Nature of God: CREATION of LIFE, a Great Miracle

In earlier posts, the nature of God was shown to be self-existent and able to create the universe from nothing. He then chose this planet for further enhancement. He created light, the air we breathe, gravity, and started the earth rotating. But more outstanding works were to come as God continued His plans for the world.

Two major creative acts were carried out on the third day, Genesis 1:9-13:

“And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.”

First, the waters were all gathered together in one place and labeled seas as the dry land appeared. Psalms 104 indicates that the mountains and hills moved up from below the water to the shape that God wanted as the seas receded. This means that a tremendous number of tons of earth were elevated by the creative power of God. Likewise, any excess water had to be secured or stored because large amounts would be needed later in Genesis 6 when the flood covered all the land. Thus, we see God preparing the earth for his ultimate creation, man.

At this time, the percent land and ocean —21% land and 79% water—was determined by God. This was exactly the percentage needed so that later evaporation of the sea water would form clouds that would rain on the land. The rainwater not absorbed by the land, would flow into the ocean at a rate that would not cause the seas to rise and flood the land. Instead, evaporation from the seas would constantly occur forming clouds that provided rainfall on the land. Only God would know how to set this percentage so that evaporation and rainfall would balance and the land would not be diminished or covered by flooding.

Second, God performed another great, creative miracle. He formed life on the earth. This was a tremendous miracle. In all of the universe, only the earth was privileged to have life.

Plants of three kinds—grasses, herbs, and trees—were created. But in creating life, God put an important rule or law into effect: each of the three would be promulgated by seeds according to its kind. This means that when planted, the seeds of each plant would produce only plants of the kind from which the seed had been formed. God’s law for the plant kingdom—seeds produce plants according to its kind—has remained in effect to this day. When planted, wheat seeds produce a wheat plant and not corn or barley. Anise seeds, although tiny in size, always produce anise plants. Apple seeds can only produce apple trees and not orange trees.

Another fact also emerges. Because plants always produce plants like the plants from which the seeds were derived, self-driven natural evolution to a different species is impossible.

Scientist have discovered that a rotating sphere such as a balloon full of water, will undergo a slight equatorial bulge in the middle and a slight flattening at the poles. This is the shape of the earth—given the name oblate ellipsoid by scientist. This slight change in the shape of the earth may have occurred on this third day when God created the land and the seas while the earth rotated.

This great miracle of life created on this day may not be appreciated. Before this day, God was the only life in the universe. Now the earth, tiny by comparison to the remainder of the universe, is blessed with life. Everything needed to sustain plant life had been created. The plants use carbon dioxide from the air and minerals from the ground to provide a multitude of seeds for new plants to form and sustain life. Thus, the awesome plan of God for His ultimate creation was continued—plants will be the food or source to sustain life for all life to follow—animals and mankind.

Consumption of plants by an animal or man would not exhaust the food source because each plant sends forth many seeds for many new plants.

In summary, from the many planets in the universe, God chose to create life on this earth. Thus, the nature of God is to plan and then carry out His creative plan to make a special place in the universe for mankind.
