The Vicious Cycles, Judges 2:8-10

This post concerns the vicious cycles that happened in Judges.

The Vicious Cycles illustrates the Israelite reaction when Joshua died.

After Joshua’s death, the attitude of the people showed a failure to depend on God and obey Him, Judges 21:25. “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” This attitude shows the mental failure of the people during the period of the Judges. Each person took the attitude that ‘I know the right thing for me to do.’ Dependance on God and His word disappeared from their lives.

The book of Judges records these tragedies that occurred in Israel, Judges 2:8-10. “Joshua… the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110 years… all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.

At this point, a persistent problem surfaced: the parents did not train their children to worship God only. Instead, they and their children turned to idol worship.

God endeavored to restore the people, Judges 2:14. “So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers… And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies,”

This launched a series of vicious cycles. When they turned from God to idols, God allowed them to be oppressed. Then, when they cried for help, God sent deliverers to liberate them, Judges 2:16. “Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.”

But when the Judge died, they again turned to worshipping idols.

Israel repeated this cycle again and again. Thus, unfaithfulness became the general characteristic of Israel.

This book teaches us valuable lessons. We must continue to serve God and worship Him according to his instructions and teach our children to be faithful.

So, what did we learn?

1.Israel’s failure to teach their children to follow God exactly resulted in a terrible apostacy of worshipping idols.

2.We must faithfully worship God and instruct our children to do the same.
