#2 On the Nature of God: Once created, what did God do with His Creation?

In the earlier post, God was shown to be always in existence and capable of planning and executing the super miracle of creating the heavens and the earth. That meant that the universe had a beginning, a zero time. Note that the earth is mentioned along with the heavens or the universe. That means the earth was treated as different from the beginning, was special to God, and shows that from the beginning, God made the earth for the use of mankind.

What was next with God’s creation?

In Genesis 1:2-5, we learn that from the universe that He had created, the earth was chosen by God for special attention:

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.”

We know nothing more about the situation of the earth at this time. It was without light, void, and apparently covered in water. [Hebrew language experts say that the language indicates that the earth ‘had become void,’ but had stabilized and was not changing further. Thus, we don’t know how long after actual creation this new work by God on the earth was begun.] This situation of darkness and void was not suitable for what God was planning. Further, the darkness on the earth probably suggests that darkness prevailed throughout the universe as well, because light was created on the earth the first day.

Why didn’t God create the earth in the beautiful state needed for life and man? We do not know. Perhaps, God wanted the six days of creation to illustrate and impress mankind as to how much He had done to make a beautiful place for life.

Now God begins to change the earth to suit His purposes by creating light. At first, this may not seem to be very much to be created on the first day. However, we now know that light is a phenomenon of electromagnetic radiation that moves through space in a wave form at 186,000 miles per second. When absorbed by darker objects, heat results. Thus, this is a tremendous creation that would be needed by much of what was still to be created.

From these verses, we learn that God is a Spirit who can speak. When He speaks, anything that He wills happens. Note that God does not consist of atoms and molecules. He did not create Himself as a body. In fact, a Spirit is all we would expect that could exist and be capable of creating the heavens and the earth.

First, He corrects the problem of darkness on the earth by just speaking light into existence. Note that light was created and was not just something emanating from the presence of God. It was a separate creation. We know nothing about the location and type of light created. However, it seems to come from a single direction because the next thing God causes is the rotation of the earth so that light appears on the surface and then darkness appears. We know nothing of the speed of rotation of the earth since nothing had been created to allow time to be counted.

However, God gave names to both periods—light is called day, dark is called night. This is the beginning of what will be the laws of nature—morning follows night, evening follows day.

Note that the earth is still covered by water because land as we know it does not appear until day three.

God also exhibits His ability to judge His creation and give names to phenomena—day, night, evening, morning—that He had created. Further, He decided when something was good and labeled the light good. This is part of the nature of God—He can observe and judge.

In Summary, God is a Spirit who can speak things into existence. This is His nature. He began the process of making the earth into something special—something suitable for what He had in mind for the future. God’s nature is to see and judge what He has created. Further, God’s nature as a Spirit is to plan and execute that plan.
