God’s Care, Ruth 1-4

This post concerns God’s care for a family and Israel.

God’s Care discusses a Moabite girl and the country of Israel, Ruth 1:1-2. “In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land.”

God warned Israel by sending a famine so they would repent of sins.

Elimelech moved his family to Moab. Then, he and his two sons died, leaving his wife, Naomi, alone with her two Moabite daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah.

When Israel repented, God blessed them again. So, Naomi returned to Bethlehem instructing Orpah and Ruth to stay in Moab. Orpah obeyed, but Ruth expressed a powerful vow of loyalty, Ruth 1:16. “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God”.

Thus, Ruth avowed her belief in God.

Once in Bethlehem, Ruth began gleaning leftover grain in the fields to provide food for herself and Naomi. Her quiet faithfulness caught the eye of Boaz, a kind and wealthy landowner and a relative of Naomi. Impressed by her loyalty to Naomi, Boaz showed Ruth great favor, protecting her and ensuring she had plenty to glean. Naomi saw the help of God, Ruth 2:20. “And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!”

Then, Naomi instructed Ruth to go to where Boaz slept and ask him to act as her redeemer. Ruth did so, and Boaz, again impressed by her character, agreed. But first, he consulted a closer relative who had the first right of redemption. When this relative declined, Boaz redeemed Naomi’s family property and married Ruth.

The marriage of Boaz and Ruth culminated in the birth of a son, Obed, who became the grandfather of King David. The town rejoiced for Naomi, her bitterness replaced with joy and a restored family lineage.

This story shows divine providence working through the faithful actions of ordinary people to fulfill a larger purpose—the establishment of the royal line of David from which the Messiah would come.

So, what did we learn?

1.God cares for His people.

2.God arranges for the later birth of King David.
