#6 On the Nature of God: The new greater Miracle of Life

In the first 19 verses of Genesis, chapter 1, the nature of God is shown to be a powerful, intelligent Spirit—the only such Spirit to ever exist— that created the universe from nothing. He then chose the earth to be transformed further. He created light, set the earth in an orbit so that there would be day and night, separated the waters into the atmosphere above the earth and into seas as well as land below, created life in the form of plants—both small and great—and then arranged the earth to have seasons, days, and years. He placed stars as signs in the sky by which man can navigate and determine locations. One might imagine this to be enough to illustrate God’s power and wisdom. But not so. More was to come as noted in Genesis 1:20-23:

“And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.”

On this fifth day, God created a new form of life—more spectacular than the plant life created on the third day. This life could move around, unlike stationary plant life. Not only could this life move itself about, it could do so in a spectacular fashion. Birds could fly in the atmosphere. Fish could swim in the water. Nothing created before or after was equipped to do either of these two special things as part of life. Of all the planets in the universe, only earth was permitted to have life that could move about.

In addition, many types of birds and fish were created and given a mission—they were to multiply and fill the air and water as appropriate. It was not yet apparent, but these two creations of life would later also serve as food for mankind.

It is not surprising that God would put the same restrictions on fish and birds that He placed on plants—each would propagate after its kind. Never would it be possible for fish or birds to evolve into a different species. Tiny hummingbirds would not produce a new species. Hummingbird eggs produce hummingbirds. Tiny minnows would not produce a rival to the mighty whales.

These mobile animals would require oxygen to move about. However, they do not have lungs like humans. Instead, fish have gills that remove oxygen from the water which is processed through the gills. Birds have a different kind of lung that exhales carbon dioxide. But, unlike man, the lungs do not inflate. Oxygen taken in by the beak travels through the lungs to be absorbed in air sacs.

God blessed these two mobile creations. They were to multiply and fill the earth. Thus, the plan of God was to provide food for new special creations to come.

In summary, the nature of God is apparent. He made a plan and executed that plan one day at a time.
