Untrusting, Exodus 14:13

This post covers the untrusting attitude of the Israelites after God freed them from Egyptian slavery.

Untrusting discusses how the Israelites repeatedly failed to trust God.

After the ten plagues, God caused the Egyptians to free the Israelites who marched out of Egypt. But the Egyptians pursued them to the edge of the Red Sea. Then, they expressed a lack of faith in God’s ability to care for them, Exodus 14:12. “For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

But Moses responded, Exodus 14:13. “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today.” So, God rolled back the sea, and the Israelites crossed on dry land. But when the Egyptians tried to cross, they were drowned, because God allowed the water to return.

However, on the way to the Promised Land, they complained again and again and showed that they did not trust in God’s ability to care for them.

Then, God instructed them to spy out Canaan—the ultimate test and surely a faith builder for the Israelites.

But when the spies reported giant inhabitants, and that they could not conquer Canaan, they were again ready to return to Egypt, Numbers 14:2-4. “And all the people of Israel grumbled… “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! …Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” And they said… “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

Thus, once again they showed a lack of trust in God.

God, angered by their untrusting nature, sentenced them to wander in the wilderness, one year for each of the forty days the spies had been gone until all those at least twenty years old, died.

Let us consider ourselves. Looking back on all the times God cared for and blessed us, let us remain faithful to God, and trust Him even more. He still governs and blesses our lives every day. Let us trust God to care for us.

So, what did we learn?

1.God sentenced the untrusting adult Israelites to die in the wilderness.

2.The Israelite children would possess Canaan.

3.We should deepen our trust in God.
