Abraham’s Promises, Genesis 12:3; 17:4-8; 15:6; 13-14
This post concerns Abraham’s promises kept by God.
Abraham’s Promises discusses how all of God’s promises came true, Genesis 17:4-8. “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations… I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. …I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”
Thus, in these verses, God promised that Abraham would sire many nations and many kings. He and his descendants would get the Land of Canaan as a possession. This all came true. Abraham’s offspring—called Israel—received fame and prosperity in the Land of Canaan.
Also, God made a special promise, Genesis 12:2-3. “…in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Jesus, the Messiah as one of Abraham’s descendants, fulfilled this promise as a blessing to all the earth.
An additional prophecy about the future of his descendants included four-hundred-years in Egypt as servants, Genesis 15:13-14. “Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that… not theirs and will be servants there, and they will… afflicted for four hundred years. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions…”
Thus, Abraham’s offspring became slaves in Egypt. They spoiled the Egyptians when God liberated them. So, they came out rich rather than in poverty.
God always keeps His promises. This becomes especially important for the afterlife, Hebrews 9:27-28. “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”
As always, our trustworthy God always keeps His promises.
So, what did we learn?
1.Every promise and prophecy to Abraham by God came true.
