The Prophecy about Peter, Luke 22:31-39
This post concerns the prophecy Jesus made about Peter.
The Prophecy about Peter discusses Jesus comments at the end of this last supper, Luke 22:31-34. “…Simon… behold, Satan demanded to have you…but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
Peter immediately stated that he was ready to go to prison or die for Jesus. But Jesus uttered a prophecy, Luke 22:34. “Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” Later, this came true.
Then, Jesus began to get the apostles ready for the future without Him. Heretofore, Jesus had taken care of everything. Now, they would have to fend for themselves, Luke 22:35-36. “And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.”
Jesus tried to remind the apostles of what would happen that night and quoted Isaiah 53:12. “For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.”
The apostles did not seem to understand but focused on what Jesus had said just before about a literal sword, Luke 53:38. “And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.” Obviously, Jesus spoke of defending oneself, not carnal warfare, because two swords would not arm twelve men for battle.
So, the last supper ended, Luke 22:39. “And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.”
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus’ omniscience predicts Peter’s behavior for that night.
2.Jesus tells the apostles that in His absence they would have to fend for themselves.
