Baby Jesus in the temple Luke 2:21-40

Baby Jesus in the temple, this post, comments on the events occurring in the temple during the first visit of baby Jesus.

During His first week, His parents obeyed the angel that appeared to Mary and named Him Jesus.

At the presentation of baby Jesus in the temple, God arranged events to publicize his birth.

The activities of Jesus’ parents in the few days following His birth show that the family followed the Jewish religion exactly. Moses’ Law called for presentation of baby Jesus at the temple during purification rites. Also, the law required circumcision and an offering. In that regard, Mary and Joseph did everything required and offered two doves or pigeons—a symbol of their low economic state. In this way, Jesus grew up as a faithful Jew.

Significantly, the hand of God arranged for two prophets to see and publicize the birth of the baby Jesus.

Firstly, Simeon, inspired by the Holy Spirit, blessed God and recognized the baby Jesus as the Messiah for a revelation to the Gentiles and the Israelites.

Although the inclusion of Gentiles appears in prophecies in the Old Testament—see Is. 52:10 among others, the life of Jesus shows that the Jews did not generally understand these prophecies. Further, Simeon’s prophecies included ups and downs in Israel during baby Jesus’ life, and heartbreak for Mary.

Secondly, old Anna attracted attention by blessing God but did not speak prophecies recorded by Luke.

Possibly, her previous experiences in the temple easily attracted a crowd from those nearby waiting for the Messiah.

Thus, as with the shepherds, God arranged for the common people to hear about baby Jesus in the temple.

When the parents went home to Nazareth, God blessed Jesus with wisdom as He grew up.

What did I Learn?

  1. As faithful Jews, Jesus and His family kept the Law of Moses.

  2. As God saw fit, He managed the revelation of the birth of Jesus to other godly, common people.
