Prayer for Apostles, John 17:6-19
This post covers Jesus’ prayer for the apostles.
Prayer for Apostles discusses what Jesus included in His prayer for His followers, John 17:6-8. “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me… For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.”
Thus, the approximately three years with Jesus had worked an incredible transformation on the disciples that Jesus had designated as apostles.
But, unknown to them, they needed this prayer. They were weak in that they did not yet fully understand what would happen that night and what it would mean to them. Note that Jesus had repeatedly spoken God’s word in the teachings they had heard. So, coupled with the miracles He did, they now believed that Jesus had come from the Father and that He had sent Jesus.
This remarkable transformation of their lives had fashioned them into believers in the truth that Jesus came from the Father. As time passed, they would have to defend this belief to the death.
A solid unity between Jesus and the Father has encompassed the apostles, John 17:10-11. “…keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may…one, even as we…one.”
This unity found itself based on the name, Jesus Christ, Acts 4:12. “…there… salvation in no one else, …no other name under heaven given among men by which we must…saved.”
Thus, they would preach salvation from knowledge about Jesus Christ.
This meant they were sanctified or set apart like Jesus to preach the gospel, John 17:17-19. “Sanctify them in the truth; your word…truth… so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may…sanctified in truth.”
They would preach and die convincing the world to believe and obey the truth about Jesus.
Today, we must continue as well to teach the world to believe in and obey Jesus.
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus prays for His apostles.
2.The apostles have now become united with Jesus and the Father in belief and purpose.
3.Jesus has become the only name to offer salvation.
