Treasure in Heaven,   Matthew 6:19-21

This post concerns placing our treasure in heaven.

Treasure in Heaven discusses what Jesus meant in Matthew 6:19-21. “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Jesus’ words can cause immediate concern, because we do not know how to lay up treasures in heaven. But happily, this verse clarifies how. Thinking on heavenly things will result in heavenly riches.

For example, Jesus explained how to love Him, John 14:15. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Keeping His commandments would provide treasure in heaven.

The writer of Hebrews focuses on an important command, Hebrews 10:24-25. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Attending worship services every Sunday and encouraging others to do the same, comprises an important obedience to the commands of Jesus and becomes part of our riches in heaven.

The apostle Paul gave another example of a command to obey, 1 Thessalonians 5:17. “… pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” So, we should constantly pray with thanksgiving for the many blessings God gives.

Finally, we are commanded to do virtuous deeds with a purpose in mind. Matthew 5:16. “…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Obeying all these commands comprises loving Jesus and storing up riches in heaven.

So, what did we learn?

1.Heaven should store our treasure and our hearts.

2.Obeying Jesus comprises keeping His commandments and storing riches in heaven.
