Job’s Quests, Job 9:33
This post concerns Job’s quests and what Jesus did.
Job’s Quests discusses the unfulfilled requests made by Job.
Job and friends argued about three facts that seem irreconcilable.
1.God remains just and righteous.
2.Job suffers.
3.Job lives a righteous and upright life.
How could God remain just and righteous when Job is righteous and upright and suffering?
Then, Job enunciated his needs to help his case. Job first recognized that no one could judge between Job and God, Job 9:33. “There is no arbiter between us, who might lay his hand on us both.” An arbitrator must have an equal relationship with both parties in order to make an unbiased decision. No such person existed in Job’s time.
Job also thinks that he would like to plead his case before God in person, Job 23:4. “I would lay my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments…” If he could just argue his case in person, he thinks he could win. On the other hand, Job recognized that this cannot occur.
Nothing changed for humanity in Job’s lifetime or for centuries later.
Then, Jesus came. He became the answer to the needs of Job and humanity. The Apostle Paul describes Jesus as having this characteristic, 1 Timothy 2:5. “For there… one God, and … one mediator between God and men,”
John describes Jesus in the same way, 1 John 2:1-2. “…we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous… the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
Jesus can serve in this capacity because He qualified as both man and Deity and could experience the difficulties of life on this earth. Likewise, since He now sits at the right hand of God, He can continue as our mediator.
Those living on this side of the cross have better hope than Job.
So, what did we learn?
1.Job does not have a mediator to argue his case of righteousness.
2.Only Jesus can serve as an arbitrator between human beings and God.
